Even slight fluctuations in blood sugar levels can very quickly produce these vision changes. If you do have diabetes, these color vision distortions can make it very difficult for you to monitor your blood sugar levels using color-coded urine test strips. So this is yet another reason to say no to cake.
WARNING SIGN
It's not unusual for athletes with diabetes to experience vivid color vision ifjfe changes after strenuous practice sessions or games. This can be a very early warning sign of diabetic eye disease. |

When their blood sugar is out of control, diabetics may have a distinctive breath odor that smells like alcohol. Because low blood sugar can cause diabetics to stagger, they may be mistaken for being drunk and not receive the immediate medical help they need.
GARLIC BREATH
Does your mouth smell like garlic even when you haven't eaten any? If so, it may be a sign of selenium toxicity (aka selenosis). While an important antioxidant, selenium should not be taken in very large doses. |
| Sweet or fruity breath, or breath that has a sweet chemical or acetone (like nail polish remover) smell, can be a serious warning sign that you have diabetes and that your blood sugar is dangerously out of control. Medically known as diabetic acidosis or diabetic ketoacidosis, this is a medical emergency. If your blood sugar isn't promptly regulated, coma and death may follow.
Bad breath was considered a serious disorder in the Talmud, the ancient Jewish scripture. Holy men with halitosis were forbidden to carry out holy rites. |

Some experts suggest that it is not a low blood sugar count per se that causes the symptoms of hypoglycemia, but rather the rapid fall of blood sugar levels.
There are two categories of hypoglycemia: drug-related and nondrug-related. Drug-related hypoglycemia is the most common and occurs in people taking medication or insulin in the treatment of diabetes. Nondrug-related hypoglycemia is less common. There are two types of nondrug-related hypoglycemia: fasting and reactive. Fasting hypoglycemia is usually related to an underlying disease or disorder. |
| Carbohydrases are also good at raising blood sugar. The carbohydrases from fungal sources are amylase, maltase, glucoamylase, alpha-galacto-sidase, hemicellulase, xylanase, pectinase, and phytase. If you have sugar cravings, food cravings, and low blood sugar, amylase in particular may help tremendously.
The carbohydrase enzymes that digest sugars are involved in breaking down sucrose, lactose, and maltose. |

In either case, the result is that blood sugar levels remain high; sugar spills into the urine, and many complications can develop in the body from the abnormal blood sugar levels.
There are two types of diabetes. The first is called type I, insulin-dependent, or juvenile-onset diabetes. It usually begins in childhood and develops very quickly. Type I diabetics, who account for only ten percent of the diabetes population, usually have reduced numbers of active beta cells in the pancreas; those are the cells responsible for the production and secretion of insulin. |

Now, if you take a conventional approach, you say, oh, elevated blood sugar -- let's give that person insulin. Well, yes, the blood sugar will go down, but the underlying pathology, the underlying physiological dysfunction which results in elevated blood sugar has not been addressed. So from my perspective, the term "diabetes" actually obfuscates what's going on with the patient physiologically. |

Aloe vera stabilizes blood sugar in diabetics
Diabetic patients who take aloe vera for 3 months experience a significant drop in fasting blood sugar levels. They also exhibit lower cholesterol levels and slight improvements in total cholesterol. Numerous clinical studies have been published that demonstrate aloe vera's antidiabetic properties.
Diabetics are also likely to benefit strongly from aloe vera's blood enhancements (see below). |

However, it should be noted that pomegranate sugars are somewhat unique in that they do not spike blood sugar levels as easily as other fruit sugars. It's a mysterious effect, actually, and scientists are not sure why pomegranate juice seems to be so mild in its blood sugar effects. This makes it the ideal juice for diabetics, as it also helps reduce atherosclerosis risks in diabetics. Read Pomegranate Juice Could Benefit Diabetics for more details. |

Herbal tea products that effectively lower blood sugar are seen as competition for high-profit diabetes drugs. The most effective way to protect the market for patented pharmaceuticals is to disrupt the business operations of those selling natural alternatives such as herbal teas, and that's exactly why this raid took place.
From a scientific standpoint, there is absolutely no question that drinking bitter melon as a tea (or taking it as a supplement) helps regulate blood sugar. Cinnamon has a similar effect, as do many other herbs. |

A human study found that giving cinnamon extract to type 2 diabetics significantly reduced their blood sugar levels.
BLOOD PRESSURE: In one study, rats were given a sugar solution to increase their blood pressure. Then they were given ground cinnamon, cinnamon extract, or a placebo. The rats that were given the ground cinnamon and cinnamon extract had reduced blood pressure.
Tips for Using Cinnamon
SELECTION AND STORAGE:
• Cinnamon is available in ground and in stick form.
• To check for freshness, smell the cinnamon. Fresh cinnamon has a sweet odor. |
| DIABETES: When coriander was added to the diet of diabetic mice, it helped stimulate their secretion of insulin and lowered their blood sugar.
HEART HEALTH: Coriander was given to rats that had been fed a high-fat and -cholesterol diet. The spice lowered total cholesterol and triglycerides significantly.
ANTIBACTERIAL: Researchers isolated a compound in coriander called dodecenal, which in laboratory tests was twice as effective as the commonly used antibiotic drug gentamicin at killing salmonella. |

But candy bars and energy bars are only temporary fixes, and they actually make blood sugar swings even worse.
Whenever you have bad or down moods, they can affect your outward behavior. An angry comment or outburst can cause hurt feelings, start an argument, or even trigger a physical brawl. Often, the effect snowballs.

| In the morning, that slices of deli turkey, stress may be compounded by a breakfast of coffee and sugary foods, leading to blood sugar swings. In the afternoon, people are again tired and hungry, and their neuronutrient levels are declining.
Take the Mood Quiz
This five-part quiz will help you assess your moods and some of the dietary and nondietary factors that affect your moods and behavior. Circle either "Y" for yes or "N" for no. Answer the questions honestly, and use a separate piece of paper if you don't want other people to see your answers.
How Stressed Are You? |
| Many of these eating habits set you up for a diabetes-like blood sugar pattern, which can increase fuzzy thinking and mood swings.
What's the Rest of Your Life Like?
I don't have enough time to unwind. Y/N
I think about work on my days off and when I'm on vacation. Y/N
I feel like I need to check work-related e-mail or voice mail on weekends or when I'm on vacation. Y/N
I don't exercise regularly. Y/N
I don't have many hobbies, and I don't do much aside from work other than maybe watch sports on television or go out drinking with friends. |
| Elevated blood fats and blood pressure, as well as a lack of energy, are often signs of blood sugar problems. Even if your mood is relatively stable now, you may eventually develop mood problems.
The Bigger Picture
I don't mean to suggest that nutrition is the only factor influencing our moods. To the contrary, our eating habits and other types of behavior result from a complex interplay of nutrition, genetics, upbringing, psychological makeup, stresses, society, and the people around us. |

Associated Hypoglycemia
Low blood sugar (glucose) is the lay term for hypoglycemia, which is best described as "an abnormality of metabolism that results in a precipitous drop or a flat curve in normal blood sugar levels."? Just like nutritional deficiencies/dependencies and cerebral allergies, hypoglycemia can cause anxiety. |

Interestingly, treating the gum disease may help control blood sugar levels.
WARNING SIGN
Women who take fertility drugs for more than three months are at increased risk of developing gum disease. It's the estrogen in most of these drugs that can adversely affect gum tissue.
Inflamed gums can also signal the bacterial infection Vincent's stomatitis or necrotizing gingivitis (aka trench mouth). In severe cases they can damage oral bone and gum tissue. |

Such processing and refining reduce the amount of neuronutrients in foods and increase the amount of rapidly digested sugars and carbohydrates—changes that play havoc with our blood sugar levels and our moods.
What do I mean by processing and refining? An apple is an unrefined food. When it's made into applesauce, much of the fiber is broken down, so our bodies absorb the sugars faster in a way that's more likely to cause a diabetic-like glucose spike. During the processing of applesauce, levels of vitamin C and other nutrients decrease. |

| Agrimony is known to cleanse and strengthen the liver, help regulate the heartbeat, and lower blood sugar levels. It is used in treatments for asthma, bladder irritation, bronchitis, cancer, coughs, cystitis, diarrhea, dysentery, incontinence, kidney stones, laryngitis, sore throat, and trichomonas. In Chinese medicine agrimony is used to mitigate excessive menstrual flow.
Recent research has shown that agrimony can increase blood coagulation when used as a wash for wounds. It is also useful as a topical wash in treatments for bruises, sore muscles, sprains, hives, and eye ailments. |
| It tonifies the lungs, spleen, and chi, increases the body's production of phagocytes, and nourishes the blood, increasing the red blood cell count and blood sugar levels. It also nourishes the entire body, particularly for those who are exhausted and wasting away, suffering from chronic illness, or recovering from surgery or childbirth. It helps the body clear excess phlegm and improves the resiliency of the skin. It is also said to promote weight loss. |
| Although fenugreek can be used to lower blood sugar levels, diabetics should use it for this purpose only with guidance from a qualified health-care practitioner.
Range and Appearance
Fenugreek, an annual native to western Asia and the Middle East, grows to about 1 to 2 feet in height and resembles a large clover. The flowers are trifoliate and toothed; the flowers, which grow in the leaf axils, have a yellow-violet corolla. The brownish seeds are contained in long, narrow, sickle-shaped pods. Each seed is oblong, with a deep furrow dividing it into two unequal lobes. |
| Green tea also helps keep blood sugar levels moderate. Tea also stimulates the metabolism and is used as an aid in weight loss.
Even though caffeine gets a bad rap, it has many healthful benefits. Green tea has about 25 mg of caffeine per cup; black tea has about 35 to 40 mg. The caffeine content of green tea is about as much as that of a can of soda and one-third to half as much as that of a cup of coffee. Caffeine blocks the naturally occurring tranquilizer adenosine, so that the brain becomes stimulated. |

In addition, "sugars" applies to so-called natural sweeteners such as honey, barley malt, maple syrup, molasses, and raw organic cane sugar, which also raise your blood sugar levels. For the sake of simplicity, Dr. Sinatra and I, along with most nutrition experts, also use the word "sugar" and "sugars" to signify chemically created corn-based fructose and high-fructose corn syrup. Finally, I often use the term "sugar" or "sugars" to mean quickie carbs or much-like-sugar carbs. (Get your list of "Sugars by Any Other Name" at www.SugarShock.com. |
