This is illustrated by (1) an infant who developed convulsions when his nursing mother drank an aspartame soft drink, and (2) a young woman believed to have aspartame-related epilepsy who convulsed within minutes after chewing one piece of "sugar-free" gum. - H. J. Roberts, M.D., Aspartame: Is It Safe? Soft drinks, phosphorus, meat and osteoporosis In addition to the significant health risks posed by the artificial chemical sweeteners found in diet soft drinks, another major health risk exists. This one is rarely discussed, however, and because few people know about it.

We suspected that the amount of sugar and junk food they were eating was a factor and advised the two children and their mother that they should go onto a sugar-free diet. The two children were horrified. A month later, one child was well and the other remained as hyperactive as he had been before. The boy who was well had been following the diet, while the other refused to do so. He told us in no uncertain terms that he would never ever stop eating sugar and stamped his foot to emphasize his decision. We then advised them to go on to plan B.
People who have been on a sugar-free or low-sugar diet long enough generally develop a dislike for too much sweetness in their foods. Even a quarter teaspoon of sugar in coffee or tea is cloyingly sweet. Foods that are bland are also acceptable and preferred by many Bland foods include breads, potatoes, rice, and all the cereals. A bland food can be consumed in large amounts without satiating the person, and they can be used as carriers for other foods, such as gravy, jam, and butter.
Anyone who doubts this need only see what happens when their children are placed upon a sugar-free diet for at least 2 weeks. It is important to do this before advising children to avoid sweets permanently and totally. Mental and Emotional Disorders Food additives may also cause mood disorders. The symptoms include fatigue, depression, and anxiety, in various mixes. Most sufferers of the very severe and manic depressions do not fall into this category, but there is evidence that they are suffering from severe allergic reactions, perhaps to foods.
When they are placed upon a sugar-free diet, which usually also removes the other additives, they will remark many months later how good other food tastes again, something they had forgotten over the years. Foods to which an animal has not adapted or foods containing toxins that do not kill immediately produce chronic ill health. An example would be the placing of arsenic in one's food in small amounts. Arsenic tastes sweet and is, therefore, not detectable by taste or smell. Over weeks and months, it will make the person quite ill. This was at one time a favorite method for poisoning enemies.

Most sugar-free products (chemical sweeteners) When shopping for healthy products at the grocery store, be especially wary of any product that claims to be "sugar free" on the label: virtually all of these products are sweetened with artificial chemical sweeteners. Some examples of foods to watch out for are sugar free syrups, sugar free fruit drinks or punch drinks, and sugar free puddings. Just because it says a sugar free doesn't mean it's good for you.

Be selective about sweeteners. sugar-free sweeteners, like sorbitol and mannitol, can give you gas. Sucrose, found naturally in fruits and honey, can also be a problem for some. But for those who can tolerate it, honey may ease constipation and clear up diarrhea associated with IBS. Avoid fluffy foods. A main cause of gas is swallowed air, so go slow on milk shakes, whipped cream, and souffles. White bread, by the way, has more air - and less fiber — than whole wheat bread. Healthy habits Diet is just one strategy for eliminating the discomforts of irritable bowel syndrome.

This lack of evidence of safety for sucralose is especially troublesome for people trying to avoid added sugars, since so many of the available sugar-free now contain sucralose as their sweetener. So it may not be easy to digest, so to speak, when I suggest that sucralose is yet another chemical sweetener that should be avoided by those wishing to protect their health.

Natural, sugar-free sweeteners such as liquorice root and stevia leaf are therefore preferred, but even they are claimed to present a health risk, especially when used indiscriminately. The most sensible way to satisfy a sweet tooth is to eat dry fruits (raisins, dried figs, dates, apples, apricots, peaches, pears, prunes and others). These are very healthy snack foods because they contain easily digestible sugars and a high density of vitamins, minerals and fibre per unit weight. Edible gums, mainly from Acacia species, are water-soluble polysaccharides that yield simple sugars when digested.

Many people find that the sweeteners in sugar-free candy can cause diarrhea. How clever of you to turn that side effect to your advantage! Each person will have to experiment to find the right "dose." • • • **** Sugarless Gum Pick a flavor that you like and experiment to find the right dose. The "sugar alcohols" used to sweeten sugarless gum—maltitol, sorbitol, mannitol, and xylitol—are not absorbed from the digestive tract. They act as "osmotic laxatives." Chewing sugarless gum does not contribute to tooth decay. A gum containing xylitol might even help fight ear infections.

Eat a lot of tart cherries, both fresh and in pies, jams, and sugar-free juice. They contain anthocyanins, antioxidants that may help prevent cancer and heart disease. Q Drink beet juice (from roots and greens), carrot juice (a source of beta-carotene), fresh cabbage juice, and asparagus juice often. The data were obtained following ten minutes of chewing sugar-free gum. In the study group, children had an average of three fillings, thirty-to thirty-four-year-olds had the greatest number of fillings, and older individuals had an average of five fillings. (In older people, the lower average was due to the fact that many had lost teeth.) Researchers found a direct correlation between the number of amalgam fillings and mercury levels in the subjects' saliva, although values varied considerably.
The fruits should be as special sugar-free blends. While fruits contain numerous antioxidants and cancer-inhibiting compounds, they also have a lot of sugar, and cancer growth is sugar-dependent. For this reason, cancer patients should avoid fruit altogether. Furthermore, don't resume fruit consumption until your cancer is well under control. What to Eat at Home Once home, you can control your diet more easily. Maintain a diet of ten servings of fruits and vegetables a day, preferably blenderized, and avoid bad fats and simple sugars as much as possible.

A typical specimen of this committed "low-carber" strolls through Disneyland, one hand grasping a vat-size cup of sugar-free soda, the other holding any of a zillion "carbohydrate-free" snack foods yet to be invented—hot dogs on low-carb buns, low-carb cotton candy, low-carb candy bars, low carb-popcorn. You get the picture. And it's not pretty. Cutting carbs is not enough. We have to cut the junk. We have to learn, unfortunately, that in most cases the food industry is not our friend.
Since they aren't technically sugar, manufacturers are able to say "sugar-free" when they use sugar alcohols as sweeteners, but they're required to include these sweeteners in the carb count on the nutrition label (though not everybody does). Scientists call them sugar alcohols because part of their structure chemically resembles sugar and part chemically resembles alcohol. They're certainly a lot better for you than pure sugar. Xylitol actually has health benefits. But some of them can cause slight gastric upset for some people, like a little gas or a mild laxative effect.

According to Agatston, you will lose between 8 and 13 pounds in the first two weeks, and most of that will come off your midsection. In phase two, you reintroduce fruit, certain cereals, bran muffins, pasta, whole-grain breads, and other starches, albeit in small amounts. On this phase, you continue to lose weight at the reasonable rate of 1 to 2 pounds a week.
